What makes us feel good about our work?
This week was kinda relaxing - no exams, no assignments. Instead I spent all my free time on research - it feels good that making progress on research. I have a lot to do, however, in the coming week - have to finish grading students' reports, write two assignments, prepare for a quiz, and work on my research so that I can meet with my advisor again on Friday. No time to relax this weekend. As a result, yes my TED talk sharing time again.
The speaker Dan Ariely is one of my favorite researchers. He is well respected in the areas of Marketing or Behavioral Economics. The experiments he did seem simple and easy, but the findings are insightful. He has several TED talks to which all worth listening. And the one I am going to share is the latest and my recent favorite.
What motives us to work? In a society that the work is divided into small steps that makes people to see the meaning of what they do, are people just motivated by money? Dan Ariely shares many psychology experiments, showing that in the day to day work, there still exists subtle meanings, and the need to be positively motivated and recognized, which actually can be easily neglected and destroyed.
A very good talk. If you are a manger, you can't miss this.
